We open new rooms year after year, and currently boast seven of them. That is a decent number, we think — and yet for some reason a great many returning teams ask us: “Do the old rooms always stay the same, or do you change them enough each year to make it worth coming back if we played them a while ago?”
The question puzzled us, since we have a completely new room every year. Our oldest room, the The Psychopath Killer's Trap , opened more than six years ago. It is true that in December we moved the whole room from Kazinczy Street to our Erzsébet körút venue and gave it a small facelift, but in terms of its puzzles it stayed the same. So we didn’t suggest to any of our regulars who had played it at the old venue that they play it again at the new one, since they already knew the solutions, hiding places, mechanics and so on — it would have offered nothing new beyond the new look of the sets and venue.
This time, though, it’s different. Our Death Trap: Bunker room is likewise one of our older ones and likewise moved from Kazinczy to the boulevard, but this time we seized on the move and changed it: from the plain Bunker theme it became Chernobyl , and the puzzles expanded and changed considerably to match. So this old-new room of ours may well be worth playing again for everyone…
There are countless kinds of escape room these days, and they can be grouped by a million criteria and attributes: technical solutions, theme, difficulty, target age group, the nature of the puzzles, old or new generation, location, the skills needed to solve them, and so on.
Here we’ll pick out the technical or engineering-flavoured rooms, prompted by the new Chernobyl mentioned above.
In technical or engineering-flavoured rooms there are no cunningly worded riddles to decipher and no hidden treasure to find; there are no magical creatures, objects or devices — so you could say the theme is a more serious one. In such rooms the puzzles are typically electronic, scientific or logical: screwing fuses into a switchboard according to a circuit diagram you have obtained, say, or carrying out chemical experiments with a pipette and other equipment to reveal the next code.
These rooms are not, of course, only for electricians and chemistry teachers: like all the others, they require no prior knowledge or qualifications — all the information you need is there in the room.
